Trigger Finger

Stenosing Tenosynovitis, also known as Trigger finger, is a condition in which the finger(s) get stuck in a bent position. Often movement can occur with this condition, however the finger will usually snap back similar to a trigger being pulled. This condition occurs when inflammation narrows the space within the sheath that surrounds the tendon in the affected finger. If trigger finger is severe, your finger may become locked in a bent position. People whose work or hobbies require repetitive gripping actions are at significantly greater risk of developing this condition.

Symptoms

  • Finger catching or locking in a bent position
  • Finger stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Popping or Clicking sensation with movement
  • Tenderness or a bump (nodule) in the palm at the base of the affected finger.

Treatments

  • Resting hand to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Splinting to straighten affected finger during non-active periods
  • Exercises to decrease stiffness and improve range of motion
  • Medications are used to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Steroid injections are powerful anti-inflammatory treatments when injected into the sheath may often resolve the condition.
  • Surgery to release the tendon is a last resort and may be recommended if non-surgical options are not successful.
